Alert! Traffic Laws You Can't Overlook: Using Turn Signals at the Correct Distance for Maximum Safety
Every time you drive, whether changing lanes or turning into a side street, moving close to the curb in preparation is crucial etiquette. But equally important is giving a "turn signal" to warn the vehicles behind you.
Many drivers may have forgotten the precise distance required by law to activate the turn signal in advance. Knowing this distance is essential for ensuring maximum safety and preventing accidents caused by miscommunication on the road.
Today, AS AUTO brings you the necessary regulations and recommendations to review clearly, ensuring your every journey is compliant with the law and effectively helps instill traffic discipline.
What is the Legal Distance for Activating Turn Signals?
According to the Thai Land Traffic Act B.E. 2522 (1979), Section 36, the law explicitly stipulates that:
"The driver must give a turn signal or other signal before turning or changing lanes, at a distance of not less than 30 meters, and the signal must be visible to other drivers at a distance of not less than 60 meters."
Recommendations for Maximum Safety
While the law sets a minimum distance of 30 meters, for enhanced safety, AS AUTO recommends adjusting the turn signal distance to align with your driving speed:
- In City Areas (Low Speed): Activate the turn signal at least 30 meters in advance.
- Outside City/Highways (High Speed): Extend the distance to 60 meters or more, allowing vehicles following at high speed sufficient time to brake or slow down.
Activating your turn signal correctly and at the right time is the simplest form of communication on the road, effectively preventing accidents in ways you might not expect.
